Dating from around 1890, this Grand Tour bronze figure takes the form of a male athlete in the classical Discobolus pose, preparing to throw a discus. The sculpture exhibits a dark brown patinated finish, a rounded oval base, and detailed definition of the muscular anatomy, including the taut arms, torso and legs. The subject is captured mid-windup with the right arm extended backward holding the disc and the left arm reaching down towards the knee. Measuring 13.5 x 7.5 cm, the item works well in a gentleman's library or study, positioned securely on a bookshelf amongst volumes of literature or on top of a writing desk as an accent piece.

A Grand Tour bronze sculpture is a small-scale replica of classical Greek or Roman statues, created primarily in the 18th and 19th centuries as educational souvenirs for European travellers visiting cultural sites across Italy and Greece.

These figures were typically cast using the lost-wax or sand-casting method, crafted from solid or hollow bronze and finished with a dark patination, often mounted on marble, slate, or integrated metal plinths.

Authentic pieces usually display detailed hand-chiselled finishing, high metal density, age-appropriate wear to the patina on raised areas, and historical mounting construction such as threaded iron rods underneath the base.

A classical bronze figure can be styled on a desk, bookshelf, or mantelpiece alongside books, architectural models, or framed monochrome prints to create a classical academic aesthetic.

Dust the bronze regularly with a soft, dry brush, avoid chemical polish or abrasive liquid cleaners, and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax to protect the patinated surface from moisture and oxidisation.
