Description

Pair Antique Japanese Meiji Cloisonné Enamel Phoenix Vases c.1900

Brief Description:

This is a superb and highly decorative pair of antique Japanese cloisonné enamel vases dating from the Meiji period, circa 1900.

Each vase is of elegant tapering baluster form, with rounded shoulders, a short waisted neck and gently flared rim, beautifully finished with exposed metal mounts to the mouth and foot.

The principal decoration features a magnificent phoenix, finely worked within a shield-shaped reserve and depicted with sweeping, elongated plumage in soft shades of pink, blue, white, russet and gilt.

Above the phoenix panels are richly detailed bands of flowers, leaves and scrolling foliage, set against an unusually attractive deep brown-black enamel ground. The shoulders are further decorated with intricate repeating floral motifs, adding considerable richness and visual depth.

The reverse sides are also finely decorated with further stylised bird and foliate motifs, demonstrating the quality and attention to detail throughout.

The fine metal cloisons neatly define the individual enamel colours and patterns, producing a wonderfully intricate surface characteristic of quality Japanese cloisonné work from the late Meiji period.

A very attractive and unusual pair, ideal for display on a mantelpiece, cabinet, console table or within a collection of Japanese works of art.

Attributes:

Origin: Japan

Period: Meiji Period, circa 1900

Material: Cloisonné Enamel on Metal

Decoration: Phoenixes, Flowers & Stylised Foliage

There is expected age-related surface wear, minor rubbing, small marks and occasional imperfections to the enamel and metalwork, consistent with Japanese cloisonné of this period.

There are also some minor localised surface irregularities and areas of wear visible on close inspection, particularly around the extremities, but nothing that detracts significantly from their overall decorative appearance.

Please study the detailed photographs supplied, which form an important part of the condition report.

These Japanese Meiji period cloisonné enamel vases date from 1900 and measure 18.2 cm high, 7.6 cm wide, and 7.6 cm deep. Each vessel has a tapering baluster form with rounded shoulders, a short waisted neck, and a gently flared rim with exposed metal mounts. The surface displays a deep brown-black enamel ground decorated with shield-shaped reserves containing phoenix birds with sweeping plumage in pink, blue, white, russet, and gilt. Additional details include floral scrollwork, leaves, scrolling foliage, and geometric bands defined by fine metal cloisons. Expected age-related surface wear, minor rubbing, small marks, and occasional imperfections appear on the enamel and metalwork. These items fit well on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, cabinet, or console table in a living room, hallway, or study.

Meiji period (18681912) Japanese cloisonne is known for its intricate wirework, enamel techniques, and transition from dark grounded palettes to complex pictorial designs incorporating traditional motifs like phoenixes and florals.

These pieces were typically crafted using a copper or brass base, onto which thin metal wires (cloisons) were affixed to form patterns, subsequently filled with coloured vitreous enamel pastes and fired multiple times before final polishing.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit extremely fine, precise wirework, a heavy metallic weight, seamless enamel surface polishing without air bubbles, and traditional Japanese decorative motifs typical of the late 19th century.

Displaying a pair of cloisonne vases on a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece creates a balanced focal point that complements both contemporary minimal and eclectic interior designs.

Clean gently using a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth to remove dust, avoiding water immersion, harsh chemical cleaners, or abrasive polishing compounds that could damage the enamel surface or wire solder joints.
