This original Edwardian watercolour painting depicts fishing boats with red sails on a calm sea off Scarborough, hand-titled to the bottom left and signed by the artist GM Avondale. The artwork on paper is protected by glass and enclosed in a thick moulded black wooden frame with a stepped profile, complemented by a thin gold leaf inner slip. The palette consists primarily of soft pink tones in the sky and water contrasting with the vivid red sails, housed within the high-contrast dark monochrome outer moulding. Measuring 30 cm high and 43 cm wide, the piece is suited for display in a domestic interior above a sideboard or within a coastal-themed room. The exterior shows light signs of use and minor marks on the frame in keeping with its age, maintaining an excellent used antique condition.

During the Edwardian era, British artists frequently documented coastal landscapes and fishing fleets using watercolours. Works from this period often focused on atmospheric lighting conditions, capturing misty dawns and calm waters along historic harbour towns.

Artists used water-based pigments applied to heavy cotton rag paper. These works were typically mounted behind glass in wooden frames, often featuring gilded inner slips or deep bevelled profiles to complement the artwork.

Authentic pieces generally display natural age marks, such as slight foxing on paper, period-appropriate artist signatures, original backboards, and authentic moulding styles on the frame.

A framed coastal watercolour can be hung above a console table or integrated into a curated gallery wall alongside modern photography and black-and-white prints to create balanced visual texture.

Display the painting away from direct sunlight and avoid humid environments to prevent fading and foxing. Ensure UV-protective glazing is used when re-framing or restoring antique artworks on paper.
