Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This Hepplewhite serpentine chest of drawers belongs to the late 18th century, dating to approximately 1785. The piece is constructed from mahogany with a warm brown timber colour, finished with a visible patina across the surfaces. The top and drawers feature crossbanding, complemented by cockbeaded drawer borders, keyhole escutcheons, and swept French bracket feet. Six circular brass drop handles are mounted symmetrically across the three long drawers, matching the serpentine curved front design. The piece measures 85 cm high, 106 cm wide, and 58 cm deep. Such a chest of drawers functions practically as bedroom or hallway storage for folded clothing, linens, or household items. The traditional English country house style integrates smoothly into period bedrooms, dressing rooms, or living spaces as a functional surface for lamps or decorative objects. The solid construction and classic proportions allow the chest to stand independently against a wall in domestic settings.

Hepplewhite style furniture originated in late eighteenth-century England, characterised by subtle curves, refined proportions, light forms, and balanced neoclassical lines popularised by cabinetmaker George Hepplewhite.

These chests were typically crafted from solid mahogany timber or fine mahogany veneers, constructed using hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and fitted with cast brass ring or swan-neck handles.

Authentic period examples feature hand-planed secondary timbers, irregular dovetail jointing inside the drawers, original cast brass hardware with age-appropriate patination, and smooth, flowing serpentine curves across the facade.

Position the chest as a focal point in an entryway, bedroom, or living area, paired with contemporary artwork, minimalist ceramic lighting, or structured mirrors to contrast the warm wood tones.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct heat sources and high humidity fluctuations.
