This 18th century Georgian wall art piece is a mezzotint portrait of William Pitt the Younger, engraved by George Keating after Simon de Koster and published in London on January 18 1794. The black and cream work is set in a paper mount and glass glaze within an antique black-painted wooden moulding frame detailed with gold leaf corner spandrels and corner carvings, enclosing an inscribed plate line at the bottom. The framed piece measures 74 cm high, 59 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. Placed above a sideboard or within a gentleman's library, this traditional framed portrait brings period character to an interior wall. The sitter is depicted half-length in a plain open coat, lace frill neckerchief, and powdered hair tied behind, accompanied by dedicated text and a coat of arms engraved on the plate line below the portrait.

A mezzotint is an intaglio printmaking process that produces soft, tonal gradations without hatch lines. The copper plate is roughened across the surface and smoothed back down to create light and dark areas, making it popular during the eighteenth century for reproducing portrait paintings.

Eighteenth-century mezzotints were printed using oil-based inks on handmade rag paper using a copper plate engraved with specialized rockers and scrapers.

Authentic Georgian mezzotints exhibit visible plate impressions around the image margin, fine tonal shading without halftone dots, laid paper textures, and period publication lines at the base of the print.

Antique portrait prints can be mounted on focal walls alongside contemporary artwork in a gallery wall layout, or positioned above a console table or mantelpiece in classic or transitional interiors.

To preserve historic paper prints, keep them out of direct sunlight, maintain stable humidity levels, and frame them behind UV-protective glass using acid-free mounting boards.
