A Georgian reverse glass mezzotint print by Valentine Green (1739-1813) after the painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). Circa 1779.
 
This beautiful portrait is by one of Sir Joshua Reynolds, perhaps the most well known and fashionable portrait painter in Georgian England. Little is known of Sarah Campbell other than that her father was Pyrse Campbell, MP and Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty and Treasury. She married Thomas Wodehouse in Norfolk and had three sons.
 
Valentine Green (1739-1813) was a British mezzotint print maker; Associate Royal Academician and publisher, often in association with his son Rupert. In 1773 he was appointed mezzotint engraver to the King George III and in 1774 he became a member of the Royal Academy. In 1775, he was appointed mezzotint engraver to Karl Theodor, Elector Palatine. Green was one of the first engravers to show how brilliantly mezzotint could be applied to the translation of pictorial compositions as well as portrai...
