19th-Century Maritime Oil Painting – Brig Mary Wylie, Kincardine, Malta

Brief Description:

This is a beautiful and wonderfully executed 19th-century British maritime oil painting on canvas, depicting the brig Mary Wylie of Kincardine entering Malta Harbour under full sail.

The vessel is shown in impressive profile, flying the British Red Ensign and approaching the fortified harbour beneath a bright Mediterranean sky. The composition is particularly appealing for its meticulous rendering of the ship's rigging, sails, crew and hull, while the harbour fortifications and lighthouse provide an evocative historical backdrop. A further sailing vessel can be seen offshore in the distance.

The painting bears the descriptive inscription along the lower edge:

“BRIG MARY WYLIE KINCARDINE – Entering in Malta Harbour”

There is also a named pennant flying from the mast, adding further character and documentary interest to the work.
