Late 16th-Century Chinese Kraak Porcelain Charger – Wanli Period - For TLC

Brief Description:

This is a superb Chinese blue-and-white porcelain charger, dating from the late 16th century during the Ming Dynasty, Wanli period (1573–1620).

The charger is decorated in the classic Kraak porcelain manner, with a central shaped medallion containing freely painted flowering branches and foliage, surrounded by a broad border divided into radiating panels. These alternate between stylised floral sprays, auspicious motifs and geometric ornament, all executed in varying tones of underglaze cobalt blue.

The reverse is also decorated in underglaze blue with characteristic loose circular and linear motifs around the underside of the rim. At the same time, the large unglazed foot shows the natural signs of considerable age and manufacture.

Despite its damaged condition, this remains an extremely attractive early Chinese porcelain charger with a wonderfully strong decorative presence. Importantly, the three small sections which have become detached are present with the piece, making it an excellent candidate for sympathetic professional restoration.
