Henry Alken 'Ideas' Series - Trio of Hand-coloured Engravings Circa 1826

19th century
For Sale by Kings-Lane
Description

Henry Alken 3x 'Ideas' Series 1826

A charming and highly amusing matching trio of antique hand-coloured soft-ground etchings with aquatint by the preeminent British sporting artist and caricaturist Henry Thomas Alken (1785–1851).

These plates belong to Alken's celebrated satirical series, "Ideas, Accidental and Incidental to Hunting...", published in London by Thomas McLean at the Repository of Wit & Humour, 26 Haymarket. The series is famous for playing on the word "Idea" to capture the comical mishaps, arrogance, and misadventures of the early 19th-century equestrian set.

The trio comprises three highly narrative, captioned plates:

1. “I say my hearty fellow, have you any IDEA where I can get a personal conveyance to Melton?”

2. “I say my good woman, have you any IDEA how they manage here, to get a horse out of a Brook?”

3. “Throwing out Ideas... I say my Book caps are for LUNS where the bounds are... are you?” (An ironic depiction of a chaotic steeple chase/hunt line).

Each plate bears the classic artist publication line 'Hy. Alken, Del.t'. Beautifully finished with an original contemporary hand-coloured wash, these prints display the lively caricatured expressions, fluid horse silhouettes, and dry British wit that made Alken one of the period's most desirable illustrators. Each print is presented uniformly in an elegant, simple black frame.

Condition Report:

All three prints are in stable, honest antique condition. The paper shows an authentic aged, warm cream patina with light time-toning and expected foxing spots consistent with 19th-century paper, adding to their period charm. The colours remain clear and defined. The later frames are structurally sound and ready for immediate exhibition.

Dimensions (Per Frame):

• Height: 31.5 cm

• Width: 25.5 cm

This trio of nineteenth-century hand-coloured soft-ground etchings with aquatint is by the British sporting artist and caricaturist Henry Thomas Alken. Published in London by Thomas McLean at the Repository of Wit & Humour, the plates belong to the celebrated satirical series titled Ideas, Accidental and Incidental to Hunting. Each print displays copperplate impressions, black ink lettering including the artist publication line, and hand-applied watercolour washes in sepia and black tones, set behind glass within slim rectangular black wooden frames with visible corner joints. The paper displays an aged, warm cream patina with light time-toning and scattered foxing spots. Each individual frame measures 31.5 cm high and 25.5 cm wide. These narrative equestrian plates suit a traditional gentleman's library, hallway, or staircase wall, arranged together as a matching set to bring period character and British sporting wit to an interior. They hang securely from standard wall fixings in domestic spaces and work well alongside period wood furniture, leather armchairs, and traditional country house decor.

During the early nineteenth century, satirical and sporting prints gained immense popularity in Britain, spearheaded by artists such as Henry Alken. These works poked lighthearted fun at the aristocracy, amateur horsemen, and countryside pursuits, serving as both entertainment and social commentary.

Artists etched or engraved the primary composition onto a copper plate, which was ink-printed onto rag paper. Colourists then applied watercolour washes by hand to each individual print, making every impression slightly unique in tone and detail.

Authentic period prints exhibit a visible plate mark impression around the image border, a publication line stating the publisher and date, age-appropriate toning on heavy cotton rag paper, and subtle irregularities in hand-applied watercolour washes.

Arrange them as a structured gallery wall in a hallway, library, or above a sideboard. Pairing period artwork with slim contemporary frames or placing them against modern neutral backdrops creates an engaging juxtaposition between historic art and current interior aesthetics.

Display prints away from direct sunlight and areas of high humidity to prevent fading and foxing. Frame them using acid-free mount boards and UV-protective glass to shield the fragile paper and watercolour pigments from environmental degradation.
