Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This seventeenth-century Jacobean oak livery cupboard has a dark brown timber finish and stands on upright legs joined by an open lower shelf. The upper section contains a plain cabinet door to the left and a smaller hinged door to the right, fitted with a round wooden pull knob and a later metal lock. The right door displays intricate hand-carved decoration featuring a central geometric lozenge, foliate motifs, the monogram initials AP, and the carved date 1674. Panel mouldings frame the doors, and the rectangular top projects slightly above the carcase. Measuring 77 cm high, 80 cm wide, and 36 cm deep, this small English country house side table serves well as an accent piece in a hallway, living room, or study. The compact proportions allow placement against walls where floor space is limited, providing surface display space and concealed storage behind the panelled doors while holding items on the open pot shelf below.

FAQs

A livery cupboard is an early form of English storage furniture introduced in the medieval and Tudor periods, traditionally designed to store food, bread, and household provisions under lock and key.

These cupboards were constructed from solid native oak using joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints held together with wooden pegs, often decorated with hand-carved panel designs.

Authentic 17th-century pieces display hand-planed timber surfaces, pegged joinery, period relief carving with regional motifs or dates, and dark patination in areas of frequent use.

A livery cupboard works well as a focal storage piece in an entryway or dining room, set against neutral plaster walls or paired with contemporary minimalist artwork to accentuate its timber structure.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish occasionally, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct heat sources and severe humidity fluctuations.
