Antique English Silver Hunter Pocket Watch, Hamilton & Inches

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Hamilton & Inches silver half hunter pocket watch.

The watch has a stem-winding movement, by the Coventry watch maker Rotherham & Sons, which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the name of the original retailer, ‘Hamilton & Inches, To The King, Edinburgh’, together with ‘Makers to the Admiralty’, and the insignia with a Latin inscription found on historical Royal Navy wardroom china, mess plates, and seals. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which has an engraved date, ‘4th July 1910’. There are some scratches to this inner cover.

Hamilton & Inches bought movements from several companies, both British and Swiss, but always high end quality pieces. The movements were then cased to be sold under the Hamilton & Inches name.

Hamilton & Inches was, and still is, a luxury jeweller and jewellery designer based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The company has held a royal warrant to the British monarch as goldsmiths, silversmiths, clock & watchmakers for over 120 years

This particular watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside all three covers for Edinburgh 1905, together with the mark for Hamilton & Inches. The case is in lovely condition, just a hint of gentle unevenness to the back but not detrimental at all. The Roman numerals surrounding the small lens, and also the W on the back of the watch, are filled with a handsome deep blue enamel.

The winding crown pushes in to release the front cover. Inside, there is a glass lens which is in lovely condition (some natural light reflection showing in the photos).

The dial is also signed ‘Hamilton & Inches, Edinburgh’. It is in lovely condition with pin-set blued-steel hands, including the special half hunter hand so that the time can be read when the front cover is closed.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

A half-hunter pocket watch features a protective outer case with a central glass aperture, allowing the wearer to read the time via outer enamel or engraved numerals without opening the case cover.

Antique pocket watch cases are predominantly crafted from sterling silver or silver plate, housing mechanical hand-wound movements alongside enamel dials, blued steel hands, and mineral glass crystals.

Authentic English silver pocket watches feature official hallmarks stamped inside the case, including symbols indicating silver purity, the city of assay, a date letter, and maker initials.

Pocket watches can be displayed on a traditional brass or silver pocket watch stand, mounted within a glass dome cloche, or presented in a framed shadow box alongside historic horological accessories.

Silver cases should be lightly wiped with a dedicated silver polishing cloth, while the internal mechanical movement requires periodic professional servicing by a qualified horologist.
