A silhouette portrait is a profile image rendered in solid dark colour on a light background, popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries as an affordable alternative to painted oil portraits.

19th-century silhouettes were typically created using black ink, watercolour, or cut paper mounted on card, often finished with delicate gilded detailing and encased in wooden or plaster frames under glass.

Authentic pieces frequently show natural age-related foxing on the paper backing, period-appropriate hand-drawn or cut edges, artist signatures, and original framing techniques such as gilded brass oval slip mounts or ebonised frames.

These small-scale artworks style well when arranged in gallery wall groupings alongside other period prints, or placed individually on narrow wall sections, mantelpieces, and open bookshelves.

Display the silhouette away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and paper deterioration, dusting the frame exterior gently with a dry microfiber cloth.
