This Victorian sideboard dates from 1880 and takes the form of a serpentine-shaped cabinet made from golden brown satinwood with rosewood crossbanding and inlay. The piece stands on square tapering legs with spade feet and has two central drawers flanked by cupboard doors. Details include oval inlay panels on the front doors and original circular brass ring handles set into the drawer fronts and cupboards. Practical dimensions are 91 cm high, 137 cm wide and 63 cm deep. The sideboard functions as a storage unit in dining rooms, hallways or living spaces to hold tableware, linens or household items while serving as a display surface for decorative objects.

A Victorian serpentine sideboard features a distinctive undulating front profile, where a central curved section is flanked by convex or concave side cupboards. Drawing inspiration from 18th-century Hepplewhite and Sheraton designs, these pieces combine surface serving space with integrated drawers and cupboards.

Cabinetmakers of the Victorian era utilised East or West Indian satinwood veneers, prized for their golden colour and shimmering grain. These pieces frequently feature contrasting timber inlays, such as rosewood, mahogany, or boxwood banding, alongside solid brass hardware.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, period lock mechanisms, and light wear or shrinkage consistent with aged timber backings. The satinwood surface should show natural depth and patina rather than a flat, modern spray finish.

Place the sideboard against a main wall in a dining room, hallway, or drawing room as a focal point. Complement its curved silhouette by hanging a large mirror or framed picture above it, and anchor the top surface with symmetrical lighting or glass decor.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year following the timber grain. Keep the piece clear of direct sunlight and radiators to avoid veneer lifting, timber splitting, or finish discolouration.
