Antique Sunderland Garrison Pottery Masonic & Clipper Ship Jug, C.1855

Description

Made in Sunderland around 1855, this pink splash-lustre pearlware jug is attributable to the Garrison Pottery, then operated by Dixon, Phillips & Co.

The front carries the printed arms of the Ancient & Honourable Fraternity of Free & Accepted Masons, fully titled beneath the design, with the motto "Audi, Vide, Tace" below. This Garrison version is distinguished by the calf-hoofed winged cherubim supporters. It belongs to the period when the pattern was still exclusive to the Garrison Pottery, before the copperplate was transferred to other Sunderland manufacturers after 1865.

On the other side, the titled print "THE GAUNTLET CLIPPER SHIP" shows the iron clipper Gauntlet. Launched in 1853, the vessel was depicted in a contemporary engraving subsequently adapted for Sunderland pottery. Both black transfer prints were hand-coloured after firing in yellow, green and iron-red enamels.

The white ground is scattered with pink and copper-purple splash lustre, while matching lustre bands accent the rim, collar and spout. The base is unmarked and carries an old paper collection label marked "170".

Condition

Excellent condition. There is a small firing hairline confined to the glaze inside the spout; it does not extend into the body. Otherwise excellent, examined under UV light.

Sunderland lustre pottery refers to 19th-century earthenware produced in the Sunderland district of North East England, renowned for its metallic glaze finishes, particularly pink splash lustre. These vessels frequently featured transfer prints of mariners verses, Masonic heraldry, or landmark engineering achievements.

Pink splash lustre was created by applying a solution containing gold over a white earthenware body, which oxidized during firing to create purplish-pink metallic tones. The splashed effect was achieved by dropping oil or alcohol onto the wet lustre glaze prior to firing, causing the glaze to pull back into irregular mottling.
