Antique Edwardian Mahogany Inlaid Compactum Wardrobe C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A magnificent antique Edwardian mahogany inlaid compactum wardrobe, dating to circa 1900, of impressive scale and richly decorated throughout with finely worked floral, urn and scrolling marquetry.

The architectural four-door façade is particularly striking, each tall panel centred by elaborate urn and foliate inlay, with further decorative marquetry extending across the frieze, lower cupboard doors and central drawer fronts. The warm mahogany timber provides a superb backdrop to the contrasting inlaid decoration, creating a highly decorative piece with exceptional presence.

Internally, the wardrobe offers excellent practical storage. The outer compartments provide hanging space, while the central section incorporates shelving above a useful arrangement of drawers. This combination of hanging, folded storage and drawer space makes the piece particularly functional despite its grand proportions.

Original-style brass ring handles complement the design, while the moulded cornice and restrained architectural detailing give the wardrobe the refined character associated with quality Edwardian cabinetmaking.

Large decorative wardrobes of this calibre are increasingly difficult to source, particularly examples retaining such an extensive coordinated scheme of inlay. Its combination of visual impact, craftsmanship and practical storage gives it strong long-term appeal for collectors and interiors seeking an important statement piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, a compactum wardrobe is an all-in-one bedroom storage system that combines hanging space, deep drawers, and upper cupboards within a single wooden framework.

These pieces were typically crafted using solid mahogany, walnut, or satinwood frames, often detailed with satinwood or boxwood marquetry inlay, hand-cut dovetail joints, and cast brass hardware.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut timber veneers, Neo-Classical decorative motifs such as urns and foliate scrolls, natural age-related patination, and original steel locks or brass handles.

Position the piece along a central wall to serve as a focal point, pairing its rich mahogany timber with neutral wall tones, linen drapery, and contemporary lighting fixtures.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the furniture away from direct heat sources to preserve the inlaid veneer.
