Antique William IV Period Compactum Wardrobe

19th century
Description

A superb antique William IV period compactum wardrobe in mahogany. This was made in England & dates from around the 1830-1840’s period.

This is of amazing quality and is a most impressive piece. There are two tall sentry box style hanging compartments on either side of a large bank of generous drawers. The flame mahogany panelled doors have beautifully carved baluster rails going down the sides, with incredibly fine details. This sits on an inverted breakfront plinth base and the top has a beautifully moulded cornice. The central bank of drawers are adorned with a stunning shell carved pediment.

The mahogany has a gorgeous rich colour tone and wonderful grain patterns. We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There are various small marks and indentations here and there under the polish, commensurate for age.

This breaks down into six smaller sections for ease of transport, when assembled this is a very large item with lots of storage space for clothes.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A compactum wardrobe is an expansive piece of 19th-century bedroom storage furniture that combines a central chest of drawers or linen press with flanking full-length hanging cupboards within a single unified frame.

Cabinetmakers during the William IV period primarily used high-quality solid mahogany and rich flame mahogany veneers, often set over pine or oak carcases with brass locks and turned wooden knobs.

Authentic William IV pieces dating from the 1830s typically display transitional features between Regency and early Victorian styles, characterized by bold proportions, turned spiral pilasters, lotus motifs, carved crestings, and heavily figured timber veneers.

A substantial compactum wardrobe serves as a focal architectural piece in a master bedroom or dressing room, grounding minimalist schemes through rich timber tones or blending seamlessly into traditional interiors alongside classic upholstery.

Flame mahogany veneers should be kept away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent drying or fading, with regular dusting using a soft microfibre cloth and periodic application of a high-grade beeswax polish.
