A Rare Chinese Bronze Cylindrical Tripod Censer for the Islamic Market 17th Century

17th century
Description

A Rare Chinese Bronze Cylindrical Tripod Censer for the Islamic Market

17th Century

A heavy and exquisitely cast scholar's censer of transitional late Ming to early Qing style, measuring 8.5 cm x 8 cm and possessing a substantial weight. The solid cylindrical form is supported by three short cloud-style feet and features three finely framed Begonia-style lobed cartouches. These cartouches enclose raised Arabic calligraphy set against a meticulously chased, textured diaper ground, reflecting the cross-cultural trade and aesthetic exchanges of the period.

The base displays an apocryphal four-character Zhengde seal mark cast in relief within a square frame, honoring the enduring imperial Islamic-Chinese artistic tradition. Exhibiting a warm, rich patination and exceptional casting definition across the reliefs, the censer is presented in excellent antique condition consistent with its age, showing stable surface patination and minor, expected wear from historical handling.

Dimensions: 8.5 cm x 8 cm

Provenance: Ravenel International Art Group, Hong Kong, Spring Auction, 2015 (Lot 9024) — a leading international auction house renowned for establishing major market benchmarks across Asian art hubs; subsequently acquired for The G.S. May Esquire Private Collection, London.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These bronze vessels were produced in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties for domestic Muslim populations and export, combining traditional Chinese casting techniques with Arabic calligraphic decoration.

They were cast using the lost-wax technique with heavy copper alloy bronzes, after which the calligraphic panels were detailed by hand and polished to achieve a smooth patinated surface.

Authentic period examples feature thick wall construction, natural age-related oxidisation, consistent base wear, and calligraphic script cast directly into the mold rather than shallowly engraved later.

Place the censer on a bookshelf, desk, or mantelpiece where the dark bronze tone and detailed calligraphy can serve as a focal point against neutral walls or wood surfaces.

Maintain the original surface patina by dusting lightly with a dry soft cloth or soft-bristled brush, avoiding abrasive chemical polishes or moisture that could alter the natural oxidisation.
