Mezzotint portrait whole-length on horseback, wearing long wig, armour, sash, shoes and spurs, and sword, and holding a baton; a black serving boy on right holding a helmet; building in background to the right; cavalry with drums in background to left; large plain in distance, with infantry formations; mountain on the horizon. c.1689

Frederick Herman de Schomberg, 1st Duke of Schomberg and an unknown boy by and published by John Smith, after Sir Godfrey Kneller, Bt Military commander born at Heidelberg of an English mother; served throughout Europe in various armies; accompanied by William of Orange to England, 1688; Commander-in-Chief in Ireland, 1689; was killed at the Battle of the Boyne.
