18th Century Portrait of a Fashionable Young Lady in Woven Silk

18th century
Description

Held in a period gilt and glass frame

Oval silk size visable: 35 x 29 cm (13 ¾ x 11 ½ in)

Frame size: 45 x 40 cm (17 ½ x 16 in)

Provenance: Private Collection, England

This elegant silk woven image was created at the end of the 18th century probably in France. The subject is adorned in an elaborate, large-brimmed plumed hat decorated with feathers, which complements her voluminous, soft curls and a dramatic, layered ruffled collar. Her fashion is that of around the late 1780s and was popular in France. The artist Elisabeth Louise Vigée-Lebrun painted herself similarly in a straw hat.

The entire silk is framed in an oval verre églomisé frame with gold-stenciled corner rosettes that enhance its antique, decorative appeal. Verre églomisé is a decorative technique where designs and metal leaf (such as gold or silver) are applied to the reverse side of a glass panel to create a mirrored, reflective, or layered effect and were very popular for the period.

Importantly the silk is in good condition. There are no splits or pulls and the marks you see on the images are just darker threads.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Woven silk portraits are historical textile artworks created by weaving fine silk threads to construct detailed pictorial subjects, a technique that gained prominence across Europe during the eighteenth century.

These textile artworks were typically mounted behind protective glass, often incorporating reverse-painted black and gold verre eglomise borders, and enclosed within gilded wooden frames.

Authentic period silk pictures demonstrate age-appropriate fibre toning, original reverse-painted glass mounts with historic gilding, and period timber backing boards.

These framed textile artworks can be integrated into a gallery wall arrangement alongside period prints or placed individually in narrow wall spaces to introduce historical texture.

Silk textiles should be kept away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent degradation of the natural fibres, with routine cleaning restricted to gently wiping the outer frame glass with a dry cloth.
