Gents Hamilton Fontainebleau “B” Calendar Watch, C1970

1940 - 1960
Description

Gents Hamilton Fontainebleau “B” Calendar watch, c1970.

The watch has an automatic movement which is working nicely.

The watch measures 35.5mm wide excluding the winding crown, and 29mm high excluding the lugs. The case is stainless steel and it is in good condition. The back of the watch has the Fontainebleau logo.

The lens has some minor nibbling along the right-hand edge but not too detrimental. There is some natural light reflection showing in the front photos.

The signed dial is in its original finish with original hands, centre seconds hand and a date display at 6 o’clock… this is an early form of quickset where the hands are repeatedly moved backwards and forwards between 10 past midnight and 8.30pm until the desired date is reached.

The Hamilton Fontainebleau “B” was produced from 1968 through roughly 1971. The “B” denotes the style of the case, either rectangular or TV screen.

A later leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Dealers Notes

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (because of GPSR legislation, we no longer post items less than 100 years old to Europe, including Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-20th century automatic wristwatches utilise a mechanical movement powered by the natural motion of the wearers wrist rather than a battery. The 1970s era is characterised by distinct geometric case shapes, bold dial layouts, and integrated calendar complications.

Cases from this period typically feature stainless steel or gold-plated alloys paired with acrylic crystals over the dial. Straps were commonly crafted from genuine leather, crocodile-embossed leather, or articulated stainless steel bracelets.

Authentication involves inspecting the movement for maker marks, serial numbers, and correct calibre designations. Original dials exhibit age-appropriate patination, precise typography, and era-correct branding matching official archive records.

A vintage square-cased wristwatch pairs with tailored business attire or casual smart wear. The classic proportions and leather strap allow it to serve as a subtle accent alongside modern formal accessories or minimalist wardrobe staples.

Mechanical timepieces require professional servicing every three to five years to clean and lubricate the movement. Exposure to moisture, strong magnetic fields, and direct physical impacts should be avoided to preserve mechanical integrity and original dial conditions.
