This portrait depicts a lady of the later 18th century given the style of hair and manner of dress.
The subject wears a softly draped white garment or shawl accented with a jewelled clasp or brooch near the bodice. Her voluminous, chestnut hair is styled into soft, cascading curls typical of aristocratic fashion during the 1780s. Georgina Duchess of Devonsire was one of the earliest exponents of this manner and style (see mezzotint image).
This portrait was believed to depict Susannah De Crispigny wife of Richard Sutton MP but she died in 1767 and therefore the style of depiction and manner of dress does not fit for the date. However, more likely it depicts Richard Sutton’s second wife, Anne Williams, who died in 1787. A common enough error when large family collections of pictures are catalogued years later, in this case possibly in late 19th century.
John Russell RA (1745–1806) was the leading English pastel portraitist of the late 18th century, celebrated for his velvety chalk portraits that captured high society and royalty. Significant and much admired he clearly represents a strong influence in the portrait drawn here by an, as yet, unknown artist.
