Antique Riveted Copper Boiler

19th century
Description

A good example of an antique riveted copper boiler dating from the late 19th Century. Most likely originally used as an industrial boiler or measure, it's the perfect size for a log bin or planter. It is excellent quality with a riveted seam, riveted detail around the bottom and three brass lions paw feet. It has maker's stamps on the rim for Edward Villers Wilkes.

It is in good condition with a lovely verdigris patina. There are some dinks and dents and a couple of small holes but it still displays well. The feet have been put on later but suit the piece well. It has been lightly cleaned and polished to retain its wonderful aged patina and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originally manufactured during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for laundering clothes and heating domestic water, these copper vessels feature hand-riveted seams and excellent thermal conductivity.

These containers were crafted primarily from sheet copper with copper or iron rivets, often elevated on cast brass feet to keep the hot metal base off flooring.

Authentic period pieces display visible hand-hammered joinery, heavy copper riveting along structural seams, and natural verdigris oxidisation near the base and interior.

These large metal vessels are commonly repurposed as fireside log holders, floor-standing plant pots, or umbrella stands to add warmth and natural patina to living spaces.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry cloth and apply microcrystalline wax to preserve the existing patina without stripping away natural surface oxidisation.
