Extremely Large Exhibition Quality Antique Victorian Carved Mahogany Mirror Back Console Table

19th century
Description

This is an important example of British furniture and history having a large mirror plate placed within a quality acanthus carved and scrolled frame. It is surmounted by a decorative plume depicting Britannia with her lion, an oval shipping scene, the Irish harp and the Scottish thistle to each side. This is an exhibition quality piece produced in the early stages of Queen Victoria’s reign and foreshadows the growth of her Empire and her eventual title, the Empress of India. Victoria inherited a nation that was culturally mesmerised by its naval power and sprawling Empire. This piece showcases this national pride of Britain’s international pursuits and places it firmly in the hands of the British people by also celebrating exquisite British craftsmanship. Farming tools are carved on the base of the mirror frame above a fantastic serpentine shaped top with a double moulded edge. The frieze is carved with Masonic symbols and a courthouse; these features hint that at the heart of Britain’s imperial exports were the rule of law and the skills of the people. The frieze is supported by two beautifully carved figures, one holds a cornucopia and the other has laurel leaves to the front. The shaped back is supported with carved vines and fruit decoration that stand on a shaped plinth base. This is a wonderful piece that perfectly captures Victorian nationhood. It demonstrates pride in its imperial strength, the British people, and the rule of law. These are enjoined together in a culturally rich piece that depicts Britain as an ancient, cultured and educated nation.

This is a true piece of history.

It is available to view in our Suffolk showhouse by appointment.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian Rococo Revival furniture, prominent in the mid-19th century, is characterised by elaborate foliage carving, grand proportions, sweeping scrollwork motifs, and dramatic sculptural elements such as caryatids.

These grand pieces were typically constructed from solid dense timbers such as mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-carved detailing, silvered glass mirror plates, and robust mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved irregularities, original patination within the deeper carved recesses, hand-planed secondary woods like pine or oak on the reverse, and heavy structural proportions.

Position the piece as an architectural anchor in a high-ceilinged foyer or formal dining room, balancing the intricate dark mahogany woodwork against neutral walls and understated contemporary lighting.

Dust regularly using a soft microfibre cloth, apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, and maintain stable humidity levels away from direct heat sources.
