A finely carved late 19th-century Italian white marble figure of a young girl bathing, by P. Barranti of Florence, standing 72 cm high. The charming naturalistic composition depicts the barefoot child modestly wrapped in flowing drapery, her head gently inclined and hands drawn towards her chest as though caught in a quiet moment after bathing. Barranti displays considerable skill in the delicately modelled features, softly curling hair beneath her head covering, youthful hands and feet, and contrasting folds of fabric. A small overturned vessel rests at her feet upon the integral oval base. Signed “P. Barranti, Florence.” A particularly appealing example of Florentine late-19th-century genre sculpture.
