Monumental Chinese Carved Hardwood Sculpture of a Guardian King (Lokapala)

1900 - 1920
Description

A monumental and superbly detailed Chinese hand carved hardwood figure group depicting the powerful Guardian King, Lokapala (known in China as Tianwang). Historically adopted into Chinese Tang Dynasty spiritual traditions, these celestial guardians were fiercely tasked with warding off malevolent forces and safeguarding the deceased.

This exceptionally fine and rare large scale example captures Lokapala in a commanding, dynamic stance. He bears a fierce, wrathful expression to terrify evil spirits, wielding a drawn sword in one hand while clad in incredibly elaborate, high relief ceremonial armour. He stands triumphantly atop crouching demons and defeated spirits, a powerful symbolic representation of order conquering chaos.

Masterfully sculpted from a substantial and dense block of hardwood, this impressive figure group exhibits fantastic depth and movement. It survives in excellent original condition, boasting a rich, deep wood grain and an outstanding historical patination.

• Origin: China

• Period: Late Qing Dynasty / Republic Period, circa 1900

• Iconography: Lokapala / Tianwang (Heavenly King / Guardian Spirit)

• Condition: Good antique condition with no structural damage or losses. The carving remains entirely stable, exhibiting only a few minor, age-related shrinkage splits to the grain in keeping with dense hardwood of this scale.

• Dimensions: Height 72cm × Width 28cm × Depth 27cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Lokapala is a Heavenly King or guardian deity in Buddhist mythology, traditionally depicted in ornate armour to protect sacred realms from evil forces. In Chinese art, these figures are rendered with dramatic postures, ferocious expressions, and traditional martial regalia.

Traditional Chinese sculptures are frequently hand-carved from dense hardwoods such as zitan, huali, or hongmu, as well as native camphor and boxwood. Artisans utilise subtractive carving techniques to create intricate relief work, often finishing the surface with natural lacquers or inlaid glass and bone accents for the eyes.

Authentic period carvings display natural age-related wear, hand-tool marks inside deeper crevices, and a smooth patina developed through handling over decades. Inspecting structural jointing, the weight of the hardwood, and signs of historical shrinkage helps verify genuine age.

A monumental sculpture functions effectively as a grounding focal point atop a minimalist sideboard or within an alcove. Pairing dark hardwood figures against neutral plaster backdrop walls accentuates their sculptural silhouette and intricate carved surface detail.

Keep hardwood carvings away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent timber splitting. Regular dusting with a soft, dry brush and an occasional light application of microcrystalline wax will protect the wood finish and preserve its natural sheen.
