Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Saint George and the Dragon is one of the most prominent iconographic motifs in Eastern Christian devotional art, symbolising the triumph of faith and good over evil. Originating in the Byzantine tradition, these panel paintings were created as venerated objects for private worship or church iconostases throughout Eastern and Southeastern Europe.

Icons from this era were typically executed on seasoned wooden panels, often lined with linen canvas and coated with a gesso ground (levkas). Artisans painted using natural mineral pigments bound in egg yolk (egg tempera) and applied genuine gold leaf to highlight halos, background fields, and celestial details.

Authentic period icons display distinct signs of age, including craquelure across the painted surface, natural oxidisation of pigments, dark gesso shrinkage lines, and hand-planed wooden backing boards. Period-appropriate joinery, original gilded remnants, and traditional Greek or Cyrillic inscriptions also help verify age.

An antique icon serves as a compelling focal point when displayed against neutral, contemporary backdrops or embedded within an eclectic gallery wall. Positioned in a gallery corridor, above a console, or integrated into a library alcove, the rich tones and gold leaf add historical depth and warm texture to clean architectural spaces.

Keep wooden icon panels in a climate-controlled environment with stable humidity levels to prevent timber warping and flaking paint. Avoid direct sunlight, which degrades egg tempera pigments and damages gold leaf, and clean the surface strictly with a dry, soft microfiber brush rather than chemical solvents or water.
