18th Century Engraving of Weeping Angels

18th century
Description

A fine late 18th century engraving of weeping angels.

The work depicts a central weeping angel seated upon clouds holding a quill above a large open ledger; likely 'The Recording Angel' said to write human deeds in the Book of Life. The angel above has hands clasped in prayer, and to the side, the two further angels are looking on in sorrow with small floating cherub heads emerging from the clouds to the opposite side.

The work has some age tone but presents very well overall. Housed in a later 19th century glazed giltwood frame.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Eighteenth-century religious engravings frequently feature biblical compositions and angelic imagery executed with detailed stipple or line techniques. Popularised during the Neoclassical period, these prints relied on delicate shading and classical drapery motifs.

Prints from this era were impressed on handmade cotton or linen rag paper using oil-based inks from engraved copper plates. Framing typically comprised hand-carved wood finished with water gilding over red bole.

Authentic period prints exhibit visible plate marks where the copper plate pressed into the paper, alongside natural chain lines inherent to handmade paper. Tonal variation, light foxing, and crisp incised line work also distinguish original impressions from later lithographic or digital copies.

A circular tondo print functions well suspended above a sideboard or integrated into a curated gallery wall. The warm tones of gilded moulding provide contrast when positioned against contemporary neutral or dark paint schemes.

Display framed paper works away from direct sunlight, damp environments, and intense heat sources to prevent fading and paper degradation. Clean the gilded frame using a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners that dissolve gold leaf.
