Antique Ersari Turkmen Main Carpet of Classic Tribal Design, Circa 1890.

19th century
Description

Size: 12ft 2in x 7ft 9in (372 x 235cm).

Antique Ersari Turkmen main carpet from Southern Turkmenistan or Northern Afghanistan.

Circa 1890.

This is a good large size example of an Ersari Turkmen main carpet, the three rows of nine large Ersari guls are separated by well drawn filler elements. The border is of a traditional Ersari design. The carpet has a warm colour palette with reds and burnt orange along with indigo blues. Note the original long kilim ends.

The carpet is in fair condition with un-even wear and medium / low pile. (This is reflected in the price).

The carpet is suitable for normal domestic use such as a dining room or a living room, especially if the country house 'lived with' look is required.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ersari Turkmen carpets are hand-woven textiles produced by the Ersari tribe, a nomadic group originating from Central Asia. Historically crafted for functional floor coverings within tents, these carpets are recognised by repeating octagonal motifs, known as guls, arranged on deep terracotta or red fields.

Traditional Turkmen carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and foundation. Rich red, brown, and blue shades were historically achieved using natural vegetable dyes derived from madder root, walnut husks, and indigo.

Authentic 19th-century Turkmen carpets feature fine hand-knotted wool construction, symmetrical knots, and subtle colour variations known as abrash caused by small-batch dye preparation. They display traditional geometric gul patterns and a flexible, soft wool handle rather than a stiff synthetic backing.

An antique tribal rug functions as a grounding element, introducing warm tones and geometric structure to timber or stone floors. Interior designers position them in living rooms or studies beneath classic leather or minimalist furniture to provide textural contrast.

To preserve an antique wool carpet, vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling fibres. Rotate the carpet periodically to promote even wear and light exposure, and engage professional rug specialists for periodic cleaning.
