Description

Antique Burmese Pegu Bronze Figurine Sculpture Carrying a Burden on Carved Stand

Brief Description:

This is a wonderful and unusual original early 20th-century antique Burmese Pegu Bronze Figurine depicting a male figure carrying a heavy burden across his shoulder.

Dating to the early 20th century, this fascinating bronze sculpture is beautifully modelled, with the standing figure depicted supporting a large cylindrical burden across his shoulder with both hands.

The figure displays particularly pleasing detail throughout, including his expressive facial features, distinctive hair, slender yet muscular physique and traditional tied garment around his waist.

Of particular note is the fabulous ornately carved and tiered integral stand, decorated with traditional Burmese-inspired motifs and giving this relatively small bronze a surprisingly impressive presence.

The bronze has acquired a wonderful deep, naturally aged patina, with subtle variations to the surface that add enormously to its antique character and authenticity.

The subject of the burden carrier provides a fascinating glimpse into everyday Burmese life and makes this a particularly interesting example of early 20th-century Southeast Asian decorative art.

Standing approximately 7.8 inches (19.8 cm) in overall height, it is the perfect size for displaying upon an antique desk, library table, side cabinet, mantelpiece or amongst a collection of Asian bronzes and works of art.

A fabulous and highly decorative antique Burmese Pegu bronze with wonderful character, an unusual subject and a particularly attractive carved pedestal stand.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pegu, an ancient capital in Myanmar, was a prominent center for bronze casting and metalwork traditions in Southeast Asia. Figurines from this region often depict everyday life, artisans, or religious figures, reflecting local culture and craftsmanship.

Burmese bronzes were predominantly produced using the lost-wax casting method (cire perdue), which allowed for detailed figurative work. The finished castings were often mounted on carved teak or hardwood pedestals.

Authentic pieces generally display signs of age such as natural surface oxidation, hand-chased details, and wear on high points. Castings created using lost-wax methods often show minor hand-finished variations rather than crisp machine uniformity.

Display the figurine as a focal object on a dark wood bookshelf, mantelpiece, or side table alongside books and natural materials. Its dark metal tone creates a strong visual anchor against neutral or textured backdrops.

Dust the item regularly with a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush to clean intricate areas. Avoid abrasive cleaners or moisture, and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax occasionally to protect the patinated bronze surface.
