A French Realism oil painting on canvas from 1930 depicts a rustic still life arrangement set within an interior scene. The composition features a cluster of small silver fish piled inside a round green glazed ceramic bowl resting upon a warm brown wooden surface beside a cylindrical brass container and a white cloth. Chiaroscuro lighting illuminates the earthy palette, highlighting details such as the dark signature in the lower right corner, gentle surface wear along the edges, and the fine texture of the visible weave. Measuring 34.5 cm in height by 45.5 cm in width, the rectangular artwork suits placement on a kitchen or dining room wall above a sideboard. The piece brings traditional charm and understated character to residential spaces seeking a classic culinary motif.

FAQs

French still life artwork from the 19th and early 20th centuries frequently focused on humble domestic subjects, culinary preparations, game, and fish portrayed with muted palettes and dramatic light.

Traditional oil paintings were created using linseed oil-based pigments applied to stretched woven flax canvas, cotton duck, or solid wood panels.

Authentic paintings display signs of natural age, such as fine surface craquelure, canvas oxidisation on the reverse, artist signatures, and period stretching techniques.

Display the painting individually on a kitchen shelf, position it above a sideboard, or integrate it into an eclectic gallery wall in a dining space.

Keep the canvas away from direct heat sources and sunlight, avoid high humidity, and lightly dust the surface using a dry, soft-bristled brush.
