Gents 1950s Berg Parat Wrist Watch

1940 - 1960
Description

Gents 1950s Berg Parat wrist watch.

The watch has a 17-jewel hand-winding movement which is working nicely.

The watch measures 33mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the lugs. The case is gold plated while the case back is stainless steel. The case is in lovely condition, just some wear to the retaining ring on the back of the watch. It states that the watch is water protected but, as with any vintage watch, it should be kept away from water and moisture.

The lens is in lovely condition.

The dial is signed Berg Parat, a brand name registered by the German watchmaker Wilhelm Beutter of Pforzheim and Rosenfeld, Germany in 1951. The dial is in its original finish and it looks really smart… if viewed through a jeweller’s loupe, there are tiny white dots but they do not show to the naked eye. Original hands and centre seconds hand.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-century wristwatches typically feature manual-wind mechanical movements, sub-38mm case diameters, acrylic crystals, and distinct dial typography. During the 1950s, manufacturers focused on shock protection systems like Antichoc and increasing jewel counts to enhance durability and precision.

Cases were commonly constructed from gold-plated brass, stainless steel, or solid gold. Movements contained synthetic ruby jewels to minimise friction, while straps were predominantly crafted from genuine leather or expandable metal bracelets.

Authentic period watches display correct brand lettering on the dial, precise movement markings specifying jewel count, and period-correct case back stamps. The movement should feature traditional finishing techniques and correct caliber signatures consistent with German watchmaking associations of the era.

A mid-century dress watch complements formal tailoring, modern suits, or smart casual attire. Pair gold-plated cases with warm-toned accessories such as leather belts or cuff links for a cohesive appearance.

Keep mechanical watches away from water, moisture, and strong magnetic fields. Wind the watch regularly if operated, avoid over-winding, and store it in a dry environment inside a soft watch pouch or display box.
