17th Century, Oil on Canvas, Holy Face of Jesus on Veronica's Veil (Spanish)

17th century
Description

17th Century, Oil on Canvas, Holy Face of Jesus on Veronica's Veil (Spanish).

Canvas, with edges glued to board. The composition features the visage of Christ with dark hair and a beard, centrally displayed upon a golden, draped cloth or shroud held by corners against a dark, contrasting background.

Such devotional pieces - often associated with Spanish or Flemish Baroque traditions (such as the circle of Francisco de Zurbarán or Philippe de Champaigne) - symbolise the miraculous imprint of Christ's face.

CONDITION:

For 400+ years old, this oil on canvas is in remarkable condition. Some minor scratches to canvas. Would benefit from cleaning, and would look stunning in a gilt frame. The very edges of this canvas have been glued to a board, presumably to stabilise and preserve the canvas.

PROVENANCE:

Purchased from a Monastery in Barcelona, Spain.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 17th century in Spain, religious art was heavily influenced by the Counter-Reformation, which encouraged art that fostered personal devotion. Images of the Holy Face, or the Veil of Veronica (Sudarium), became prominent subjects for painters as sacred relics representing the miraculous impression of Christs countenance.

Artisans during this era typically painted with hand-ground mineral and organic pigments bound in linseed or walnut oil. These were applied onto hand-woven linen or hemp canvas stretched over timber frames, often prepared with a dark reddish-brown ground layer known as imprimatura.

Authentic period paintings exhibit age-appropriate craquelure patterns, natural oxidisation of the canvas fibers on the reverse, and historical hand-forged tacks or lacing along the stretcher edges. Technical analysis such as pigment composition testing and infrared reflectography helps confirm period-correct methods.

A dark Baroque canvas provides a dramatic focal point when hung above a minimalist console table or marble mantelpiece. Pairing classical sacral art with contemporary architectural lighting and simple timber furnishings creates a striking contrast between historical texture and modern design.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and areas of high humidity to prevent canvas warp and paint flaking. Dust gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush and consult a professional art conservator for surface cleaning or varnish restoration.
