Art Deco Oak Sideboard Cabinet by Gomme 1930s

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

A wonderfully designed Art Deco golden oak sideboard cabinet by English maker Gomme. A particularly pleasing on the eye piece with some fine art deco features; the wonderful overall curved shape, the shapely walnut handles, the curved doors, deep open jointed plinth with walnut inlay and the flight of 4 drawers inside make this so attractive - alongside the scale which is sensible.

Condition is good - the piece sits firm and strong, the 4 oak lined drawers are running smoothly - the top one with sections, the grain and tone of the oak is top grade, both doors are opening and closing as they should with good storage inside. We have a few nicks to the walnut on the handles, old not fresh and the odd mark or two to the oak fronts and sides. We have carefully cleaned the piece to highlight its features and timber and it is ready for placing.

A rather good looking Art Deco sideboard by Gomme c1930.

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco sideboards from the 1930s typically feature streamlined geometric silhouettes, curved corners, integrated wooden or Bakelite handles, and a emphasis on figured wood grain veneers such as quarter-sawn oak or walnut.

Cabinets from this era were commonly constructed using solid oak frames with quarter-sawn oak veneers over softwood cores, featuring dovetailed drawer joints, inset panel doors, and solid plinth bases.

Authentic pieces display period-correct joinery, natural timber grain variations, period makers stamps or metal badges, original surface patination, and functional architectural features such as rounded shoulders and recessed plinths.

Position the piece as a standalone storage unit in a dining room, hallway, or living space, pairing its warm timber tones with neutral wall colours, ceramic accessories, or minimalist table lamps.

Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year along the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer lifting.
