1940 - 1960
Description

Gents Eterna Matic automatic wrist watch, 1956.

The watch has a calibre 1488U automatic movement which is working nicely. The movement is fully signed and it has the serial number 4,092,474 which dates it back to 1956.

The watch measures 32.5mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the lugs. The case is stainless steel and it is in lovely condition, just minor marking to the back.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in the late 1940s, Eterna-Matic timepieces featured a ball-bearing mounted rotor system designed to reduce friction in automatic movements. This technological advancement increased winding efficiency and became a standard design configuration for self-winding wristwatches.

Mid-century Swiss watches commonly featured stainless steel, gold-plated, or solid gold cases paired with acrylic crystals. Dials were routinely crafted from brass with metallic plating and fitted with leather wrist straps.

Authentic models feature the signature five-ball bearing symbol on the dial, matching brand markings on the movement, and Swiss-made signatures near the bottom of the dial face. Serial numbers stamped on the movement or case back correspond to specific mid-century production years.

A mid-century wristwatch with a metallic dial and brown leather strap complements tailored business attire as well as smart casual wear. Neutral strap tones allow the piece to align naturally with modern leather belts and footwear.

Mechanical timepieces require professional servicing by a qualified horologist every three to five years to clean, re-grease, and calibrate the internal mechanism. Direct exposure to water, high humidity, and strong magnetic fields should be avoided.
