Early 20th-century chests inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement emphasise functionality, clean straight lines, and honest wood construction. They often feature prominent timber graining, exposed mortise and tenon joinery, and functional cast metal hardware.

These chests were predominantly constructed from solid oak or quarter-sawn oak to showcase the ray flea pattern. Hardware typically includes cast brass, bronze, or iron drop handles and backplates with subtle geometric or stylized floral motifs.

Authentic pieces feature dovetail joints on the drawer boxes, solid wood drawer linings, and natural age-related wear or oxidisation around the handles and joints. The underside and back panels generally show machine-sawn or hand-planed timber marks consistent with period manufacturing.

Place the piece against neutral or deeply painted walls to highlight the golden oak warm tones. Balance the traditional woodwork by styling the top surface with modern ceramic vessels, contemporary table lamps, or framed artwork.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth along the direction of the wood grain. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and protect the original finish, avoiding harsh liquid sprays or excessive moisture.
