Fine 19th Century Ball and Claw Sofa After Howard and Sons

19th century
For Sale by Loveday Antiques
Description

An extremely fine 19th Century Ball and Claw Down Feather Sofa after the Ramsden ball and claw model by Howard and Sons

English circa 1880-1900

Wonderfully drawn, it was strange not to find a makers mark on this sofa as it would undoubtedly have been by one of the leading upholsterers of its time. Very comfortable having a shaped quilted down feather sprung back and quilted armrests over two down feather cushioned sprung squab seats, raised on three wonderfully carved ball and claw hipped legs with acanthus leaf and rosettes carved to the knee, with splays to the rear.

The carving to the ball and claw feet is of the highest quality with dense mahogany timber used.

Newly upholstered in a fine quality neutral linen.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Howard and Sons style seating is recognised by deep cushion seats, soft rolled arms, and low upholstered profiles designed for high comfort. Frames often feature turned or carved mahogany legs, high-quality upholstery, and distinctive proportions popularised in 19th-century England.

Traditional 19th-century sofas utilise solid hardwood frames, predominantly mahogany or oak, combined with coil springs, hair and fibre stuffing, and down or feather filling. Decorative legs were carved from dense timber, often secured with metal castors or brass studding.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved joinery, heavy hardwood framing, and traditional webbing and stitching under the upholstery. Stamped maker marks or numbered brass castors on back legs frequently indicate maker origins from prominent workshops of the era.

A neutral-upholstered ball and claw sofa functions as a grounding focal point in contemporary or transitional living rooms. Pairing clean light fabrics with structural carved mahogany legs creates balance when placed alongside minimalist side tables or modern artwork.

Vacuum upholstery regularly using a soft brush attachment and address spills immediately with specialized fabric cleaner. Wood legs require occasional cleaning with a soft cloth and conditioning with natural beeswax to preserve the original patina.
