Antique French Walnut Oil Pot. Large 18th Century 3 Handle Olive Jug.

18th century
For Sale by Krave Antiques
Description

This beautiful antique southern French Walnut Oil Jug which dates from the 18th century is handmade of Terracotta and has an amazing green glazed outer.

This fabulous jug which is a large size and is a rare three handled design has a pinched pouring spout, vertical patterned raised bands to its body, a wonderful patina built up over the many years of storing oil and is a stunning example.

These jugs were originally used to store and preserve nut oils and olive oil and were sometimes hung by the two side handles with the 3rd handle being used to tip up the jar to pour. They were also sometimes dug into the ground to store. Walnuts were very popular in France in the 18th century. Most households had their own walnut tree and used the oil for cooking and also lighting.

This highly decorative antique jug would look fantastic on display in the home, hotel, restaurant or cafe.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French oil pots and olive jugs are utilitarian earthenware vessels historically crafted in rural France for storing, aging, and transporting liquids such as olive oil, walnut oil, or preserved food items.

These vessels were typically wheel-thrown using local coarse clay or terracotta, fitted with hand-formed loop handles and spouts, and coated in lead-based or mineral glazes to seal the porous ceramic surface.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of manual production, such as asymmetrical hand-thrown lines, irregular glaze application, surface patination, and wear consistent with functional historic use around the base and handles.

A textured earthenware vessel serves as a grounded, sculptural centerpiece on a sideboard, kitchen island, or fireplace hearth, providing organic texture against modern or contemporary backdrop materials.

Dust gently with a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers or submersion in water, as moisture can compromise degraded glaze or porous ceramic body structure.
