Georgian Mahogany Linen Press

19th century
Description

A fine Georgian mahogany linen press, crafted in beautifully figured flame mahogany and displaying elegant proportions throughout. Raised upon traditional bracket feet, this handsome piece features an unusual and practical arrangement of four oak-lined drawers, configured as two over two, with the upper pair of drawers being of double depth, almost certainly intended for the storage of hats or other larger garments.

Above, the pair of doors are beautifully veneered with richly figured flame mahogany panels, enclosed within a well-proportioned frame and surmounted by an attractive multi-moulded cornice incorporating finely executed dentil mouldings, adding architectural interest to the overall design.

The interior has been fitted with a hanging rail, making the press ideally suited for modern-day storage while retaining its period character.

Presented in good condition, this elegant Georgian linen press is both highly decorative and exceptionally practical, making it a superb addition to any period or contemporary interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 17th century and gaining widespread popularity during the Georgian era, the linen press was designed primarily to hold household linens, sheets, and clothing. The upper section traditionally features sliding tray shelves enclosed by doors, positioned over a lower chest of drawers.

Georgian cabinetmakers commonly used solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers, valued for their durability and distinctive grain. Drawer linings were frequently made from oak or pine, accompanied by cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, original oak or pine secondary woods, hand-planed back panels, and characteristic Georgian details such as bracket feet, dentil moulding, and flame mahogany door panels.

A mahogany linen press serves as a substantial focal piece in bedrooms, dining rooms, or large hallways. It provides versatile storage for modern clothing, television units, or tableware while introducing architectural weight and rich wood tones to a room.

Dust mahogany regular with a soft, lint-free cloth along the grain. Preserve the finish by applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding silicone-based sprays and direct sunlight or extreme humidity changes.
