Fine Quality Early 19th Century Carrara Marble Bust of a Young Girl Signed ‘Houdon’

19th century
Description

A fine quality early 19th century (circa 1800) carrara marble bust of a young girl signed ‘Houdon’.

This marble bust consisting of a young girl with her head to the side with leaves and flowers in her hair, signed ‘Houdon’ to rear shoulder, supported on a circular base.

Jean-Antoine Houdon was a French Neoclassical portrait sculptor born in Versailles in 1741 and died in Paris in 1828, famous for realistic contemporary cultural and political figures of the French Enlightenment.

He spent around 10 years in Italy winning the Prie de Rome in 1761 and was influenced by Classical masters such as Michelangelo often working directly from life or casting the model’s face.

He returned to Paris and submitted ‘Morpheus’ to the Salon of 1771 and subsequently produced many portrait busts including one for the Palace of Versailles.

He was also invited to USA by Benjamin Franklin in 1785 for Washington to sit for him, thereafter producing various sculptures and busts of the President.

This marble bust is in very good original condition for age and can go straight into a home.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical marble busts emerged during the 18th and early 19th centuries, strongly inspired by classical Roman and Greek portraiture. Sculptors focused on naturalism, delicate drapery, and capturing idealized human expressions directly in natural stone.

Sculptors primarily used fine-grained white marble, such as Carrara marble from Italy. The forms were hand-carved using iron chisels, drills, and rasps, followed by polishing with pumice and abrasives to create realistic skin textures and drapery.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-tooling marks in deep recesses, gentle edge wear, and subtle surface oxidation from age. Signatures or foundry marks are typically incised into the socle base or the lower reverse of the carving.

Positioning a marble bust on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or tall pedestal creates an immediate focal point. The neutral pale stone contrasts effectively against dark wood furniture, modern artwork, or deep wall colours.

Dust the stone regularly using a soft microfibre cloth or a clean bristle brush. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, liquids, or acidic solutions, as marble is porous and prone to permanent etching and discoloration.
