Description

This sculpture was discovered in the late 20th Century by Roy Miles. It was considered to be the best cast - and superior to the example in the Leighton Museum. It has been suggested that this was the original Royal Academy exhibit from the Summer Exhibition of 1880 (Documentation attached).

“Putting The Stone” is an important example of “The New Sculpture Movement”. It is clearly influenced by Leighton’s “Athlete Wrestling with a Python” of 1877. The New Sculpture Movement turned away from Neoclassicism and was noted for naturalistic and vigorous representations of the human body.

Thornycroft used his favourite model, the Italian Orazio Cervi, who would later pose for The Mower in 1884.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire an important example of late 19th Century sculpture.

Originating in the late nineteenth century, the New Sculpture movement brought a shift towards dynamic realism, detailed human anatomy, and naturalistic movement. Sculptors moved away from cold, static Neoclassicism in favour of psychological depth and intricate physical expression.

Most nineteenth-century bronze sculptures were produced using the lost-wax (cire perdue) casting process or sand casting. Once cast, the raw bronze was hand-chased to refine surface details and finished with chemical patination to achieve deep brown, black, or green tones.

Authentic period bronzes generally feature crisp cast details, foundry stamps, or artist signatures incised into the bronze base. They demonstrate natural surface wear, chemical oxidisation consistent with age, and a balanced weight typical of solid metal casting.
