This antique tribal saddle rug from Uzbekistan originates from around 1900 in a Central Asian Tribal style, constructed from wool with a crimson red field. The square woven textile displays five geometric diamond lozenges, a central saddle slit for a pommel, a barber-pole border, and a multicoloured fringe along the bottom edge, complemented by white, yellow, and dark blue wool yarns within the patterns and fringe. Slight even wear with a good pile and signs of tribal use appear across the surface. Measuring 69 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 1 cm deep excluding tassels, this piece functions as a decorative textile for display on a wall or flat surface within a home.

Saddle rugs, or saddle covers, are functional hand-woven equestrian textiles created by nomadic tribes across Central Asia for protecting horses and providing rider comfort during travel.

These textiles are hand-woven using hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation, incorporating natural plant and mineral dyes for red, indigo, and yellow shades.

Authentic examples feature a central slit or keyhole opening designed for the saddle pommel, irregular hand-knotted construction, natural dye variation, and geometric tribal motifs specific to Central Asian weavers.

These compact textiles are frequently mounted as decorative wall art, draped over accent chairs or console tables, or displayed on textile stands to highlight their geometric patterns.

Keep the textile away from direct sunlight and damp conditions, vacuum gently without a rotary brush, and consult a professional textile conservator for deep cleaning.
