A Large and Finely Decorated Egyptian Cairo Ware Wall Charger, Circa 1900.

19th century
Description

A large and finely decorated Egyptian Cairo Ware wall charger, circa 1900.

Of hammered copper with extensive raised silver inlay, the charger is profusely ornamented throughout with finely engraved decoration depicting a wealth of idealised scenes inspired by ancient Egypt. The densely composed design features numerous human figures, animals, temples, and architectural motifs arranged within shaped panels and intricate borders, creating an exceptionally rich overall composition.

The fine silver inlay stands in subtle relief against the warm copper ground, with delicate engraved detailing enhancing the remarkable craftsmanship. Every available surface is decorated in the characteristic manner of the finest Cairo Ware, producing a striking and highly decorative object.

The charger retains a pleasing, naturally developed patina to both the copper and silver, reflecting its age and careful preservation.

Condition: Good antique condition with minor wear consistent with age and use. The copper and silver have acquired an attractive, even patina.

Origin: Egypt (Cairo).

Date: Circa 1900.

Notes on Cairo Ware

"Cairo Ware" refers to the revival of medieval Islamic metalworking traditions that flourished in Cairo during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These pieces were typically made from copper or brass and richly inlaid with silver (and occasionally gold), combining Mamluk-inspired geometric and arabesque ornament with historicist or Pharaonic Revival imagery aimed at both local patrons and the growing European market.

This charger would generally be considered among the more desirable examples of Cairo Ware.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cairo Ware refers to brass or copper decorative items decorated with inlaid silver and gold wire or sheet, produced predominantly in Egypt during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The style emerged during a period of intense interest in Islamic art and ancient Pharaonic heritage, blending traditional Mamluk metalworking techniques with motifs inspired by archaeological discoveries.

Craftsmen formed the base shape using hammered copper or brass, after which intricate patterns were chiselled or engraved into the surface. Thin silver or gold foil and wire were then cold-hammered into these recessed channels, creating a contrasting decorative finish across the vessel or platter.

Authentic period pieces exhibit crisp hand-chiselled detail, genuine silver overlay rather than modern surface painting, and natural patination across the copper substrate. The weight of hand-hammered heavy gauge metal and signs of historical wear on the reverse surface also distinguish turn-of-the-century examples from modern mass-produced souvenirs.

A metal charger can be wall-mounted as a focal point above a console table or displayed upright on a plate stand atop a sideboard or bookshelf. The dark patina and metallic contrast complement modern dark wall colours, warm timber furniture, and eclectic gallery displays.

Dusting regularly with a soft microfibre cloth is sufficient to maintain the surface without disturbing the protective natural patina. Harsh chemical metal polishes should be avoided, as they can strip the dark contrast oxidisation and erode fragile silver inlay.
