Description

Illustrated in my third edition 'Tribal Rugs - Treasures of the Black Tent' on page 51, I sold this beautiful Yomut Turkmen spindle-bag 'igsalyk' back in the early 1990s and now back with me, sadly from a deceased estate.

It has been well looked after and is in as great condition as when I sold it back then. The design on the knotted-pile face is unusual, comprising '8-pointed stars' within large stars. The ground colour is cochineal dyed whereas the very outer border is in madder-red as is the plain-weave back.

Made around 1880 by Yomut tribes in the trans-Caspian Steppe area, the bag is complete with original tassels and braided hanging cords and is in excellent condition.

Size: 49 x 28cm (1' 7" x 11") excluding tassels.

Turkmen tribal bags were traditionally woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic groups in Central Asia for practical utility, serving as storage for household goods, tools, or ceremonial items, and reflect the distinct cultural identity and iconography of specific tribes.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the foundation and the pile, often utilizing natural vegetable dyes derived from plants, roots, and insects to achieve rich, enduring colours.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the quality of the wool, consistency of hand-spinning, natural dye variations across the pile, structural wear patterns, and traditional tribal motifs that conform to historical weaving patterns of the specific demographic.

These pieces can be displayed as wall hangings using a non-damaging mounting system, framed behind UV-protective glass, or placed on flat surfaces as accent decor to add texture, warmth, and global heritage to a room.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, avoiding excessive moisture, and occasionally vacuuming gently through a mesh screen on a low suction setting to remove dust without damaging fragile fibres.
