Antique Bronze Cased Model Colubrina Da Fortezza Cannon 19th Century

19th century
For Sale by Regent Antiques
Description

This is a superb decorative glass-cased bronze model of the Colubrina da Fortezza cannon, late 19th century in date.

It features a 25 cm long brass barrel mounted on a two-wheel carriage on an oak base with a bronze Colubrina da Fortezza plaque.

The introduction of the muzzle-loading cannon meant the end of traditional methods of warfare and ancient fortifications. In the Battle of Castillon, in 1453, the last clash of the Hundred Years' War, the French defeated the English, thanks to cannons and bombards that managed to hit the archers long before they could get within a useful distance to use their bows.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Colubrina da Fortezza model is a scale replica of a fortress culverin, a long-barreled artillery piece historically utilized for stronghold defence during the Renaissance and early modern periods.

These models typically feature cast bronze or brass barrels mounted on wooden carriages made from hardwoods like oak or walnut, secured with iron or brass fittings and spoked wheels.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural surface oxidisation and patination on metal elements, precise joinery on the carriage, and period-appropriate construction methods such as miniature rivets rather than modern threaded screws.

Scale cannon models serve as decorative accents on an office desk, a library bookshelf, or a fireplace mantelpiece, pairing well with dark wood furniture and traditional accessories.

Maintain the object by dusting regularly with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding liquid metal polishes or harsh chemical solvents that could remove the original aged patina or damage the wood finish.
