This is an incredibly elegant desk, which could also of course be used as a lovely dressing table, and would add elegance, class and sophistication to any room of ones choice. It is constructed from excellent quality satinwood timbers and absolutely smothered with every possible design of marquetry inlaid decoration which one could wish to imagine.

These kidney shaped desks are always extremely popular articles, mainly down to the fact they are just as at home in the corner of a room, or against a wall, as they are stood centrally in the middle of a room. The variety of functions and rooms they can be used in and for also adds greatly to the appeal of course.

The desk has an old leather top, which remains in pretty good condition and is elegantly tooled. Should one wish to change this leather to a brand new one of a colour and design of their own choosing this can of course be relatively inexpensively undertaken as required. There is also a working key fitted to every drawer.

As with all items which we offer for sale this 19th century desk has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure it is in absolutely the best possible condition and ready for immediate placement within the home before being offered for sale.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A kidney-shaped desk features a distinctive concave front curve designed to place the user within easy reach of the entire surface and side drawers. The form originated in mid-eighteenth-century France as a bureau rognon and gained widespread popularity in Britain during the late nineteenth-century Sheraton Revival movement.

Desks from this period frequently utilise exotic timber veneers such as West Indian satinwood, accented with rosewood or tulipwood crossbanding. Decorative elements rely on marquetry and parquetry techniques using varied stained woods, alongside hand-dovetailed drawer construction and leather insert writing surfaces.

Authentic period pieces display period-correct drawer construction, including hand-cut dovetails, secondary timbers such as oak or mahogany for drawer linings, and original brass locks or stamps from recognised makers like Edwards & Roberts.

A satinwood desk functions well as a focal point in a modern study, dressing room, or living room alcove. Pairing the desk with neutral walls and contemporary lighting allows the detailed wood grain and marquetry to stand out without overcrowding the space.

Position the item away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting and timber fading. Clean surfaces with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the finish.
