Edwardian Mahogany Dressing Chest with Adjustable Shield Mirror

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Tinker & Toad
Description

A wonderful and functional Edwardian mahogany dressing chest with an adjustable shield-shaped mirror. The bevel-edged mirror is fully adjustable in both height and angle, supported on nicely turned columns with brass fittings.

The fold-out top provides generous surface space, with a bank of three graduated drawers below, each retaining its attractive brass handles. The lower section houses a good-sized cupboard with a removable shelf, and the whole stands on a stylish plinth base. Good grain, colour and patina throughout, with wear commensurate with age.

The piece was sourced in Oxford, and during cleaning and polishing a charming discovery was made: a handwritten love letter, with a poem on the reverse, tucked beneath one of the drawers — written on headed Magdalen College paper no less. Little finds like this are part of what makes antique furniture so endlessly fascinating.

Table top height is 105cm. Width with both leaves up is 101cm wide. Mirror height is also adjustable.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian dressing chests, produced between 1901 and 1910, are characterised by lighter proportions, refined classicism, and functional features such as integrated mirrors and space-saving drop-leaf extensions.

Mahogany was the primary timber choice for Edwardian cabinetmakers, often paired with solid brass drop handles, dovetail jointed drawers, and bevelled glass mirrors.

Authentic pieces feature period brass hardware, natural timber grain variations, hand-cut or early machine dovetail joinery, and turn-knob adjustment mechanisms on the mirror frame.

Position the chest as a compact vanity area or hallway focal point, pairing the warm mahogany wood tone with neutral walls, contemporary ceramics, and subtle brass accents.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain, while cleaning mirror surfaces with a damp microfibre cloth to avoid chemical damage to the silvering.
