Hamadan Rug

1920 - 1940
Description

Hamadan rugs are robust and very usable pieces with their thick cotton foundations and a single weft between each row of knots. This is a later example and is therefore in very good condition. I like the bright spandrels intruding from each corner across the allover floral field. A sound decorative rug that can be used in any setting.

Very good condition

Date of Manufacture

Phil Bell Antique Rugs has dated this Antique Persian Hamadan Rug to the 1940s.

This Persian Traditional Hamadan rug from 1940 is made from wool on a cotton foundation. The piece displays a navy blue or indigo field filled with an allover Herati floral pattern, a central red and blue diamond medallion, and bright white, red, and blue spandrel corners. The design is framed by a red geometric border and finished with fringe at the ends. The rug shows very good condition. Measuring 206 cm high and 160 cm wide, the rug provides a sound decorative element for an English Country House interior. It can be placed on the floor in any living space, hallway, or study to add warmth and pattern to a room setting.

A Hamadan rug is a type of hand-woven Persian carpet crafted in and around the historic city of Hamadan in western Iran. These rugs are renowned for their durable single-weft construction, rich colour palettes, and varied geometric or floral medallion designs.

Hamadan carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile on a sturdy cotton or wool warp foundation. They typically feature symmetrical Ghiordes knots with a single-weft weave, creating a thick, hard-wearing pile suitable for high-traffic areas.

Authentic pieces are identified by their flexible yet dense weave, hand-dyed wool showing natural colour variations or abrash, and a single-weft construction visible from the reverse side. The patterns frequently feature a central diamond medallion surrounded by detailed Herati or floral field motifs.

A traditional woven carpet introduces texture, pattern, and depth when layered over neutral hardwood floors. Placing a pattern-rich rug alongside sleek, contemporary furniture creates visual contrast and grounds the seating arrangement.

Preserve wool carpets by vacuuming regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating brush bar. Address liquid spills immediately by blotting with a dry cloth, and schedule professional hand-washing every few years to clear deep-set debris.
