Yomud Engsi

£950    $1,282    €1,109
Another example of the Turkoman velvet as they call it. These Yomud pieces are noted for their plum red dyes and bold borders. Symmetrically knotted with the finest quality wool they are more collectors pieces than furnishing items although I think this one works in either capacity. Originally a door hanging the near square format makes them useful pieces in the home. For me the white borders filled with serrated motifs are the highlight. They border the rug and its inner panels and provide a contrast to the dark red ground. There is one motif that is drawn differently from the others, quite deliberately I think. Note the collisions that occur when they meet at the corners and the weaver has to work out how the two lines merge. This for me is the magic of handwoven rugs, random elements, mistakes and a story that they construct as you pick the design apart. I love the decorative end panels too, the deep plum elem end almost appears to belong on a different rug.
