An antique French Louis XV style daybed dates from 1920 in the French Chateau style. Constructed from walnut, giltwood, and brass, it presents a warm brown and gold colour palette with polished timber panels, giltwood rococo carvings, and brass side rails. The high shaped headboard and footboard display serpentine crest rails, intricate floral and ribbon motifs, and a central floral medallion on the footboard, supported on cabriole legs with carved feet. One side incorporates turned vertical brass rods while the opposing rail is plain timber designed to sit against a wall. Measuring 122 cm high, 110 cm wide, and 203 cm deep, this piece serves as a daybed, chaise-style seating, hallway feature, or statement bedroom piece in traditional and contemporary interiors. The walnut surfaces exhibit a rich warm colour and an attractive original patina resulting from age.

FAQs

Louis XV style daybeds, traditionally known as lit de repos, are distinguished by asymmetrical curves, serpentine crest rails, cabriole legs, and ornate rococo decorative motifs such as floral bouquets, ribbon bows, and foliage.

Craftsmen typically utilised dense native hardwoods such as walnut, beech, or oak for the main timber panels, embellished with water gilding, hand-carved detailing, and brass side rails.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved detailing, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, age-appropriate patination to the timber and giltwood, and period-correct metal rail fixings.

A daybed works effectively as secondary seating in a living room, a reading bench in a wide hallway, or a statement guest bed when dressed with neutral linen fabrics to balance the carved wood.

Dust giltwood areas using a soft, dry bristle brush to prevent damage to delicate gold leaf, and apply high-grade beeswax polish sparingly to the walnut timber to protect its finish.
