Victorian Mahogany Military Filing Cabinet

19th century
Description

A good quality mahogany cabinet dating from the mid 19th Century. It is made from solid mahogany with two panelled doors, opening to a fitted interior with 16 divisions. It has a raised brass escutcheon and it comes with a working key. It could have quite possibly been a military piece and has inset brass military style handles and an inset bone plaque with the letter 'D' in it.

It could be used as a wall mounted piece or a tabletop item.

It is in good condition for its age and the mahogany has developed a lovely rich patina. It is not without some minor knocks and marks and there are some small repairs to chips near the back corners but nothing detrimental and overall it displays well. The interior is clean and tidy and it has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian military filing cabinet is a 19th-century timber storage unit designed for administrative record-keeping in field offices, barracks, or government naval and military departments. These cabinets were crafted with robust proportions and secure locking systems to withstand frequent use and transportation.

Cabinets from this era were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or teak, chosen for stability and durability. Internal components often utilised pine or cedar secondary woods, secured with hand-cut dovetail joinery, brass lock mechanisms, and bone or brass escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature signs of 19th-century craftsmanship, including hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawers, original steel or brass lever locks, hand-planed back panels, and natural timber oxidation. Flame mahogany veneers on panel doors often exhibit subtle surface variations and age-appropriate patina.

A low mahogany cabinet functions effectively as a sideboard in a hallway, modern home office, or living area. Its flat upper surface provides space for table lamps and decorative ceramics, while the enclosed shelving offers hidden storage for contemporary media equipment or stationery.

Dust the timber surface regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood and maintain the patina, ensuring the cabinet is kept away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent cracking or warping.
